SemaCode

Barcodes have taken a step forward thanks to the Semacode.

Semacodes are two-dimensional Data Matrix bar codes that can store much more information than a conventional barcode and have been designed to be machine-readable.

Instead of requiring a barcode scanner the technology uses everyday cameraphones, which capture the image, and then translates the Semacode into a URL. The user is then prompted to go to the website using GPRS on their mobile device.

This has many great potential uses to include links to bus information at bus stops, Find my nearest by locating a Semacode at strategic locations in a city, On the stop ticket sales from promotional posters.

Currently only Symbian/Series 60 phones are compatibale but other phones to be supported must have j2me support.

Will this catch on? let’s hope so…
