Bluetooth GPS Unit
I have just purchased another gadget today - a Fortuna Bluetooth GPS unit for my Pocket PC!
I’ve been after one of these for a while, and again like the Wireless Internet Camera that I purchased recently, I have been keeping an eye on eBay for one at the right price.
I must admit that I have bid for one about a dozen times over the last couple of months, without much success, all to save about 10 quid! Today I decided that enough was enough, and rasied by bid by a ‘whopping’ £15 (woooo!) and thankfully I was successful this time!
Hopefully it should arrive in time for next week when I’ll be able to use it for a trip to Worcester I have with work.
For the geek in me, I’ll be using WiFiFoFum again, but this time using the GPS unit to record the locations of the WiFi Hotspots. I did find a great website last summer for creating maps out of the data generated, I’ll have to see if I can find the link again.
Update: The website for generating SVG Maps from GPS data is GPS Visualizer.

Just out of curiosity: Did you manage to get your Fortuna GPS receiver to work with WiFiFoFum?
The reason why I’m asking is that I have a Fortuna BT GPSmart receiver myself, which I belive is functionally equivalent to your unit.
I’ve been interested in doing a little ‘wardriving’ myself but unfortunately I’ve ended up with a combination of hardware that excludes me from using either MiniStumbler or Pocket Warrior (the former doesn’t recognise my GPS and the latter does not speak the language of my WiFi card).
WiFiFoFum is thus my last hope but since it requires me to install the utterly useless .NET Compact Framework SP2 I thought I’d check with someone else if they could get it to work before proceeding.
So to sum up my question - I’d be quite interested to know whether you managed to get WiFiFoFum to work with your Fortuna GPS receiver?
Did you get the Fortuna to work with WiFiFoFum?
Hi,
Yes I did manage to get WiFiFoFum to work OK with my Fortuna GPS Unit.
I have TomTom installed on my PDA - and there is an issue with the drivers that TomTom provide that seem to prevent another application from accessing a Bluetooth device.
If you go to http://www.pocketgpsworld.com they have more info on the issue. If you have TomTom as well you will need to download an odler GPS driver from:
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=13.
I hope that this helps.
Thanks for your swift feedback. I will look further into the WiFiFoFum application. Unfortunately it seems to require NET Compact Framework SP2 for some obscure resolution determination functionality and my PDA only has the original release. If I am to upgrade it will mean an additional RAM footprint of about 1.5MB, which I think is a bit much for a lousy resolution determination function…
My apologies for the duplicate posting by the way. I was unsure of how this thing worked.
