TomTom
Now that the GPS unit is now working correctly, I was able to turn my attentions to installing TomTom Navigator. Thankfully there were no issues with this and it installed like a dream..
I also installed CheckPOInt which is an add-on for TomTom that allows you to add other Places Of Interest (POI) such as Speed Cameras. By signing up to POIPlace you can then sync your PDA with their website for the latest data, so you can always be up-to-date. It also allows you to record your own POI’s as you pass them so you send that data back to the website. Neat.
I must admit that I was a little disappointed that TomTom had no facility to look up an address that you have stored in your Contacts, I would have thought that this would have been one of the standard functions of the software for a Pocket PC. So instead of this they have a Favourites feature, but again, this is flawed, as you can only add a favourite by clicking on the map - this means that you have to navigate to the location that you want. It’s frustrating that you can’t just type in an address and save as a favourite.
Those annoyances aside - the rest of the product seems to work well. The couple of routes that I tested around town appeared worked like a dream. On a couple of occasions I deviated from the route using a different road to the same destination. Although it did appear to throw a small ‘wobbly’ moments after me going off its planned course, it was pretty fast at re-calculating the new route.
So far so good… I might have a look into CoPilot Live though to see if the functionality is better.
Update: I have just found out that the functionality to see your Contacts is actually within Pocket Outlook, to either show on the map or navigate to.
