Mac Mini
Ever since I saw Apple’s new Mac mini I have been fighting the urge to go and buy one…
I already have a fairly decent home PC, so it’s not like I really need a replacement. I also have an MS Smartphone and a Windows Mobile PDA, so moving completely to a Mac would not be smartest of moves. But saying that, I am just soo tempted by this ultra-compact computer. I think that the price has something to do with it - at £339 it has finally made the Mac affordable to the masses!
My brother bought an iMac years ago, and I was really taken by the styling of not only the computer itself, but also the OS. It’s one of those devices that you don’t want to tuck away in a darkened room, but to have it on display. It’s this idea that has gotten me thinking about the new Mini Mac.. It’s so compact and stylish that it would be great to have in my not-so-large lounge.
I can see me now, sat in the comfort of my living room surfing the net from my sofa. I’d have my existing PC acting as a media server, with all my videos and music being streamed over my wireless network to the Mac. So far so good…
Now if I start to think about this with my sensible head on, instead of just thinking of the coolness factor it doesn’t seem as straightforward.
For this set-up to work properly, I would need to add AirPort so that it can be part of my wireless network. I don’t want wires trailing around my lounge so a Bluetooth Keyboard & Mouse (at £70) are a must, so to include the BT & AP Module (at £70) this brings an additional £140 to my budget!
The 256mb memory seems a bit low, so I would want to bring that up to 512mb at a cost of £50. The 1GB upgrade of £200 was just a tad too much!
The base model (1.25GHz, 40GB) is priced at £339, but for an extra 60quid, I could double the storage and gain a faster processor, oh decisions, decisions…
Instead of £339 I’m now looking at between £479 and £539 which is more than half as much again in cost… Doesn’t look so appealing after all…
Watch this space..
