My Top 6 Apps

Those 6 little icons at the top of your N-series handset, do you use them?

My N95 Standby Applications

The Standby apps menu gives you quick and easy access to 6 of your favourite applications. Instead of rooting around in your applications folder they are there ready for action when you need them. Every now and again I update mine as newer apps come along. Currently My top 6 are:

1. Contacts - probably the most important application on your handset and one that will surely be ignored. Although devices like the N95 are now being classed as computers we all seem to forget that really at the core of them is a mobile phone – and yes they do make calls!

2. Jaiku - A cool mobile app for keeping in touch with your friends on micro-blogging site jaiku.com. The latest version is a huge improvement on the previous and has great features such as being location aware and better battery management…

- Download from jaiku.com/mobile

3. GMail - Being a Gmail user this little java application is a must-have to keep you-up-to-date with your mailbox. OK the S60 has it’s own built-in client, but it doesn’t give you that GMail experience that you get in this mini version of it’s main web interface.

- Point your mobile browser at gmail.com/app

4. Internet Browser - Having an all-singing-all-dancing mobile you have to have a web browser to connect you to all those mobile sites.. and best of all it’s already built in to your handset…

5. Handy Weather – The British weather is an amazing thing, you just never know what you are going to expect from one day to the next. This subscription application keeps you up-to-date with the latest forecasts no matter where you are. It’s also one of the nicest looking apps I’ve seen for S60 devices.

- Download from epocware

6. Nokia Maps - This free application, built into the N95 is great for helping you out when you are lost. On quite a few occasions I have pulled my car over and quickly fired up this app to get me to my destination.

- Download from Nokia.

Want to change your Standby Apps? Easy, go to Tools, Settings, General, Personalisation, Standby Mode and select Active standby apps. from there are you able to change each of the 6 shortcuts individually.

What are your top 6 apps?

I still prefer using nokia built in email client for Gmail mainly because i can attach several files to my email which i still can not do using Gmail java app.
Ooh and also with java app you can not download attachments (except few known types). With built in client, no problem.

Im an undergrad doing media studies & I did use a lot of internet media software & graphical manipulation software for my portfolio, but I’ve picked up a virus in my handset, preventing me from connecting to the internet & I cant shake it. I’m probably going to have to get a new handset. At £4-£500 a throw, I cant do this too often. What would you say was the best firewall/antivirus to try & prevent this from happening again?
