As always these things always take me longer to do than I hoped..
So I’ve had a play with the new Nokia N95 8GB for a while now and have come to the conclusion that it’s not as good as I’d hoped ….
Ha, Ha – Maybe I was lying just a little bit there! It’s Fantastic!
OK, the first thing that you notice about the new addition to the N95 family is the sexy black case. You can tell that this handset really means business. Picking it up it just feels so much more solid in the hand. The second thing to grab your eye is of course the gorgeous new screen. Although not a dramatic increase in size, the screen just seems to now dominate the front of this handset.
On closer inspection the new variant appears to be wider, whereas it is in-fact still the same. It is just the screen slide that has been made to sit flush with the edges of the main body of the handset. This can clearly be seen in the image above on the original N95 whose silver finish is flanked either-side by the contrasting back colour.
OK, so what’s new? I hear you cry..
Well for a start the new screen size allows the Standby screen to display 7 standby apps instead of the usual 6. The Nav keys have been made smaller (as you can see from the image above) and also the Media buttons are now more raised making them easier to find. The camera of course is now shutter-less and the big selling point is that it now comes with a whopping 8GB of internal storage! Last but by no means least is the new fatter battery that will keeping you running for so much longer than the original.
One MAJOR improvement that you don’t see is the enhanced Memory Management. Gone are the days of ‘Out of Memory’ errors – now you can mutlitask to your hearts content, just look at how many apps I managed to keep open at once:

A new and much improved Nokia Search can now be found on the Standby Screen. This has had a major overhaul, and with a bit of an iPod-esque feel about it works really well in finding content on your mobile. Results will start appearing as you type just like Spotlight on a Mac.

The Camera has had the odd tweak here and there. One cool new addition is Viewfinder Grid that allows you to frame your subject a little easier.
Other minor enhancements/changes are:
- In Gallery the Home Network (uPnP) icon has now been replaced by Lifeblog.
- The Media Menu has now been removed when you switch to landscape.
- The New Nokia Music Store has been added.
- The # key for switching to/from silent profiles has finally been fixed.
So there we have it – a quick run through of some of the highlights of the new N95 8GB.
Sounds good so far, but is it worth upgrading? Find out in my next feature.

hi, can u put an n95 batteruy in an n95 8gb phone, would it work??????????????
Jason – The N95 8GB battery is slightly larger than the original N95 as it has a bigger capacity, I guess there is no reason why the smaller N95 battery won’t fit..
I can only say try it… I know that the battery from the 8GB does not fit in the original N95 due to the size difference.
Andy – Have you got your operator settings correct for sending messages? You could try hard resetting your phone back to factory settings. Make sure to back up all your images/music etc first.
When I activate my camera Nokia E66, I get the following message “Camera in use by another application”, how can I check which app this is or rectify this problem?
Andri – It seems that some other process has locked the camera, The simplest way would be to turn your handset off and on again, that should free-up the camera application.
Hi I have just bought the N95 8G, I have transfered music files from microsoft windows player properly, I can use them as ring tones, but when I open the media player on my N95, it plays for literally a mini second then ‘general system error’ appears. I have tried moving my files, but no luck
apologies if this problem has already been touched on
