Nokia N95 8GB Overview
As always these things always take me longer to do than I hoped..
So I’ve had a play with the new Nokia N95 8GB for a while now and have come to the conclusion that it’s not as good as I’d hoped ….
Ha, Ha - Maybe I was lying just a little bit there! It’s Fantastic!
OK, the first thing that you notice about the new addition to the N95 family is the sexy black case. You can tell that this handset really means business. Picking it up it just feels so much more solid in the hand. The second thing to grab your eye is of course the gorgeous new screen. Although not a dramatic increase in size, the screen just seems to now dominate the front of this handset.
On closer inspection the new variant appears to be wider, whereas it is in-fact still the same. It is just the screen slide that has been made to sit flush with the edges of the main body of the handset. This can clearly be seen in the image above on the original N95 whose silver finish is flanked either-side by the contrasting back colour.
OK, so what’s new? I hear you cry..
Well for a start the new screen size allows the Standby screen to display 7 standby apps instead of the usual 6. The Nav keys have been made smaller (as you can see from the image above) and also the Media buttons are now more raised making them easier to find. The camera of course is now shutter-less and the big selling point is that it now comes with a whopping 8GB of internal storage! Last but by no means least is the new fatter battery that will keeping you running for so much longer than the original.
One MAJOR improvement that you don’t see is the enhanced Memory Management. Gone are the days of ‘Out of Memory’ errors - now you can mutlitask to your hearts content, just look at how many apps I managed to keep open at once:

A new and much improved Nokia Search can now be found on the Standby Screen. This has had a major overhaul, and with a bit of an iPod-esque feel about it works really well in finding content on your mobile. Results will start appearing as you type just like Spotlight on a Mac.

The Camera has had the odd tweak here and there. One cool new addition is Viewfinder Grid that allows you to frame your subject a little easier.
Other minor enhancements/changes are:
- In Gallery the Home Network (uPnP) icon has now been replaced by Lifeblog.
- The Media Menu has now been removed when you switch to landscape.
- The New Nokia Music Store has been added.
- The # key for switching to/from silent profiles has finally been fixed.
So there we have it - a quick run through of some of the highlights of the new N95 8GB.
Sounds good so far, but is it worth upgrading? Find out in my next feature.

Where’s my response? :-/
Let’s try it in 2 parts then..
Sounds good this article!
Could you check some things for me on the new N95 8gb? I have some problems with the calendar on the normal N95. You can add a birthday, but can’t really add a year of birth. Older Nokia’s did have this feature, and would show you the age of your friend. The N95 doesn’t, but I’m wondering if the N95 8gb does.
It is also pretty strange that you can add birthdays to your contact’s information, but that those birthdays are not shown at the calendar.
Hopefully they fixed most of this..
Do you have any idea when this phone is available in the Netherlands? Because when those things are fixed, that’s another reason to upgrade my phone
Thanks in advance!
Hi Bram, Something odd going on with comments - I see that some of yours have been caught as SPAM… not sure why that is…
With regard to birthdays - I’ve never had a problem with this - I’ve had a N73, N80 and original N95 and birthdays are recorded fine. I don’t enter them direct into the handset though, I use Outlook to organise all of my contacts and then sync it to my phone. I get a little present symbol in the Calendar, but I don’t think that it will give you an age.. Shame as that would be handy.
Unfortunately I don’t know the release dates of the handset, sorry.
Thnx 4 info
Hi,
I really wan this phone but the one thing thats making me want to buy the N95 is the fact that the N95 8gb doesn’t have a camera shutter, is this a a problem or does it make little difference?
Sam - The camera lens cover is quite a hotly debated topic.. Although the lens is open I can’t really see this as being an issue. This is pretty standard on most camera-phones these days.. One positive thing about the removal of the cover, is that it aids start-up time of the camera, so that you are able to capture that special moment a little quicker..
This review made me shoot a very large, warm and stick wad all overe myself. There was literally steam rising from that wad.
Hi,
Do you know if this will be released on virgin mobile?
David, Sorry I have no idea about release dates on networks.
I wish I have the N95 8GB. My original N95 battery life is a total crap
Neil, can a original N95 use the battery of N95 8GB(BL-6F)
i wish to know.
Unfortunately the battery in the new N95 is slightly thicker than the original so will not fit an original N95 casing.
then i guess there is nothing we can do about the original N95 battery life except by buying N95 8GB… T_T
I heard that the N95 8GB is also Rhapsody Music compatible.
Is this true? That makes a big difference to me.
Thanks!
“Battery life on the N80 appears to start off quite well, running on full capacity for ages, but when its starts to drop, it drops pretty fast!”
i saw this on ur N80 post, i am also having this problem with my N95. Can anyone tell me wad makes this happen?
Battery life usually drains quicker if your recharging it when you shouldn’t. You should ony charge te battery when its really low
I would like to know whether there is card slot for “Nokia N-95 8GB”..,I heard that it is having 8GB HDD,so there is no card slot..Is it true that N-95 8GB is available only with 8GB & no card slot.???…please friends help me out of this confusion..
Yes, the N95 8GB has no card slot since it already has a 8GB of internal memory

Tony, what file formats are you trying to copy across? Are you trying to copy across iTunes music encoded with DRM?

Andy - If you hit the ‘Pencil’ key next to ‘C’ when drafting your message, you will have an option for Predictive Text.

Tina - Yes Nokia Maps does come pre-installed and is free.. Yes you do have to pay a subscription for turn-based navigation features though.. You can buy anything from a day to 3 years… (i think).

Hi, could anyone give me some advice please. I’ve had my n95 8gb for a couple of months now. But today it stopped sending text msg’s.
The error msg Says ‘memory full. Close some applications and try again’
I dont have any applications open, (i’ve checked then all) i’ve deleted a load of texts, i dont have any music on the phone, no extra movies other than spiderman 3 and i’ve tried my sim card in an old phone where it sent msg’s no problem.
Its very annoying when i get a text and cant reply to the person because of this problem, so if anyone else has had this problem and knows how to sort it out i would be very grateful of any advice.
Thx, Salty
I used the camera in an upright position, i.e. with the Nokia logo beneath the viewscreen horizontal, to make some video files. When I loaded them onto my computer they all play rotated 90 degrees counter-clockwise. Is there any way to fix this?
Geary - Unfortunately the N95 like all Nseries handsets only shoot video in landscape mode.
