O2 & Nokia Launch O2 Wallet

UK mobile service provider O2 have announced, in conjunction with Nokia, the dawn of a new age in mobile technology - the Digital Mobile Wallet.

The O2 Wallet as its called will be a six month long pilot in the UK’s Capital of Near Field Communications (NFC) on mobiles. The technology allows the user to pay for purchases, access events or even be used as Oyster cards for travel around London, simply by touching the phone to a reader.

500 existing O2 customers chosen for the trial will each receive a Nokia 6131 NFC handset installed with the O2 Wallet.

Trialists will be able to test a wide range of different services in London, such as making purchases in retail outlets and traveling on London’s public transport system.

This is a very exciting time on the road to an electronic wallet and a cashless society, what else will the phones of tomorrow be able to do?
