MWC: Nokia N78
Announced last week at Mobile World Congress is the rather nice looking Nokia N78, the replacement for the extremely popular Nokia N73.
Touting a 3.2 megapixel camera, GPS, a 2.4 inch QVGA screen, Music Player with integrated FM Transmitter (a-la iTrip), WiFi, HSDPA and the Navi Wheel for quick access to features.
While its not the powerhouse that is the Nokia N95/8GB and the just announced N96 - it still packs a lot of damn good features into a pretty compact device.
Battery life (the bane of most Nseries owners) should be pretty decent with the BL-6F 1200mAh battery inside.
As you can see from the picture below The N78 sat in the middle of the N82 & N95 is a sexy looking handset in its sliver and black loveliness.
The N78 has a very flush finish in that the top of the handset is almost completely flat all bar the raised Navi Wheel, with a single silver key to the right and the very small keypad buttons. The left and right softkeys are built into the handsets plastic and are marked by just two white lines either side of the Navi Wheel as are the green pickup/red hangup call buttons. The keypad buttons are made of 4 horizontal ridges meaning you need to hit the ridge left, middle or right to get the appropriate key press. An interesting concept, although to me the buttons seem to small for the handset.
Below is the N78’s camera being demoed - actually showing the Nokia N78 Product Manager talking to us about the handset during our time at MWC.
One downside to the N78, as you can see from the image below is that its a real fingerprint magnet:
If the N73 is anything to go by, then I can see the N78 selling very well indeed. I love the candybar form-factor. GPS and FM Transmitter are great additions - It’s just a shame that the camera wasn’t 5 megapixel, but then I guess you cant have everything!
