Sony Ericisson G900

Announced at Mobile World Congress back in February were a couple of UIQ handsets from Sony Ericsson, the G700 and G900. The two new mobiles are part of Sony Ericssons new G-Series range of handsets, aimed squarely at Nokia’s very successfully N-series range of mobiles perhaps?

The one that caught my attention is the Sony Ericisson G900, which has probably the best specs of any Sony Ericsson phone to date.  Boasting a 5 megapixel auto-focus camera , 3G and WiFi it also comes with the most sought after aspect of any modern phone – touchscreen.

The handset features a 240×320 pixel (2.4″) TFT screen that can be used either by touch with your finger or with the supplied stylus for writing in your own handwriting. You can even set your picture’s focus area by touching the screen when taking photos.

Since the launch of the iPhone, touch has really been the next big thing for mobile handsets.  OK the G900 doesn’t have the swish Multi-Touch interface and massive display of the iPhone, but it’s a good start for such a compact handset!  This is really something that I was hoping to see from Nokia at Mobile World Congress this year, while I was there.

This is pretty much your standard looking candybar handset from Sony Ericsson weighing in at only 99 grams, a little under Nokia’s equivalently-specced N82 which comes in at 114 grams.  One thing that I do love about Sony Ericsson phones is that they always feel very sturdy in your hand, and although you wouldn’t want to drop it, you know that the build quality means it can take the odd knock or two, something that can’t be said of some Nokia handsets.

Size is another bonus for the handset – a big issue with users is the bulkiness of handsets – they want more features yet they still want a tiny phone..  Something usually has it give..  At only 106 x 49 x 13 mm, could it be that Sony Ericsson has managed to pack a lot into a small package?

The handset runs the UIQ interface running on top of the Symbian platform.  Although I am very familiar with Symbian run S60 handsets from Nokia, I have yet to experience a UIQ handset and will be very interested to compare the two when this handset actually comes out.

Some other features to note are Stereo Bluetooth, Opera Web Browser, Video Call, TrackID and expandability using Sony’s Memory Stick Micro (M2).

All in all – I have to say that it’s a very interesting handset..  Although they may have touch, I don’t think this is any match for the King of Mobile, Nokia.  They already have some cracking handsets on the market with the hugely popular N95 and N82 that not only sport WiFi enabled, 5 megapixel autofocus cameras that can record DVD-like video, but have built-in GPS as well.  It seems that Nokia had better watch their back as Sony Ericisson are finally look set to take on the Nseries range.
