3 Skypephone S2 – First Pictures

A Motorcycle courier arrived on my doorstep today to drop off an interesting new handset – the brand new 3 Skypephone S2.

There has been much chatter on the internet recently about the replacement to the original Skypephone launched back in October last year, and today 3 have finally announced the handset.

I have been one of the lucky ones to get my hands on this handset at launch.  Although I’ve not had it long, I thought that I’d share with you some pictures of the 3 Skypephone S2.

The new 3 Skypephone S2 has integrated Skype, Windows Live Messenger, Pre-installed Facebook application, quick-links to Bebo, YouTube, MySpace, eBay and RSS feeds.  The camera has be upgraded from 2.0 to 3.2 mega-pixels and the screen has been improved to 2.2″ QVGA.

Modem drivers have been included in the handset so that you can connect it to your Mac/PC and use mobile broadband as you would with a dongle.

Tech Specs:

GSM 900/1800/1900 Mhz, WCDMA 2100 Mhz, EDGE support, HSDPA (3.6Mbps), DTM (Class B).
50MB on board and expandable to 4GB with Micro SD Card.
1150 mAh Battery.

The handset will be free on Mix & Match
Under £69.99 on Pay as You Go.

You can pre-order your 3 Skypephone S2 from your local 3Store or online and will be available in stores from 27th August.

Hi – What I’d REALLY like to know – does it support SyncML? Will I be able to sync it with iCal and Address Book on OSX?

How does Skype perform? Do you get any of the following problems:

    - random log out even in areas with full signal
    - incoming Skype calls rejected even though you’re logged in with full signal (caller goes straight to voicemail or gets a message that you can’t answer at this time)
    - inability to make Skype calls even though calling the same person on a pc works fine
    - totally unreliable presence information, contacts shown as logged in when they’re not – or vice versa.
    - very variable call quality – ranging from good to totally unintelligible – seems to be capacity problems at peak times.

All the above and more are commonplace on the original Skype phone or the “Skype for 3″, client take a look at this complaints thread on the Skype forum:

I’d be very interested to hear whether three have corrected any of these problems with the shiny new Skypephone S2.

hi, please let me know if the new skypephone s2 has the syncML. I’ve got the first Skeypephone and it’s fantastic, but I miss SyncML! I hope in your reply!

I wonder if you could tell me if the S2 has a useful “to-do list” feature. I have a nokia 6280 and use that feature all the time (enter a one line note, add an alarm time to it to remind me), and it’s the one feature missing from the original skypephone that stopped me buying it. Or do you know of a java one I could download on to the phone? I’ve had a look but haven’t been able to find one.

I have had the 3 skypephone s2 for 3 weeks. it is crap. the screen is to small. there is only 50mb memory in it. the ring tones are rubbish and the keys are to close together. it is very easy to press two keys at once. I prefer my old samsung d900. bigger screen more memory and easier to use…
