3M MPro110 Pocket Projector
The projector has taken a massive leap in technology recently, but not a major leap in size, the total opposite in fact. Miniature projectors have started appearing that can display great images, but the unit is the size of your average mobile phone and in some cases actually built inside a mobile phone!
One such device is the 3M MPro110 which I have been lucky enough to have a play with recently.
The pre-production unit that was sent to me, is about the size of a standard mobile phone such as the Nokia N82. The kit comprises the projector, a mains power adapter, a monitor connector and a composite connector with male to male converter and best of all its battery operated making it highly portable.
The projector comes with a standard tripod connector, and as you can see from the photo above I was able to attach this to my Nokia DT-22 Universal Tripod which looks like it was made to measure.
Being a mobile enthusiast the first thing that I did was hook it up to my Nokia N82. The N82 comes with TV out functionality, and a composite cable making connection to the 3M Pro110 a breeze.
In a matter of seconds I had the N82 outputting content via the 3M Pro110.
Anything that you can do on the handset can be displayed up-to 42 inches on any wall or surface of your choice. Watching movies, sharing your captured pictures and videos, playing your N-Gage games and even surfing the Internet wherever you like was a doddle.
Being a battery operated projector, it makes it so easy to take the unit with my N82 anywhere to quickly and easily share my content. Battery life is about an hour, so ideal for showing off those holiday snaps and video in all their glory on a living room wall instead of huddling around a small mobile screen. Of course you can always plug it into the mains for more intensive use.
The image quality is pretty good for such a small projector, but does come with its limitations. The colours are a little washed-out, and images aren’t very crisp, so reading text can be awkward so not recommended for PowerPoint users. But saying that, for casual use, of watching videos and looking at photos, the content is very watchable and is great to show off to your friends. A great companion for any mobile with TV-out, plus it really is great fun to use!
Unfortunately the photos I took of the device in action do not do the 3M MPro110 justice. The ones that I have included show the unit in use in a conference room, but the room was so bright that the projected image appears light. With the room dark, the projected image was fine, but without the flash the camera doesn’t handle dark images well. Hopefully you kinda get the idea.
Of course its not just mobiles that can use the 3M MPro110, the kit also comes with a cable to connect it to your computer.
Above you can see my Samsung NC10 Netbook connected to the 3M MPro110 with the Nokia N82 included for size comparisions.
Conclusion
The 3M Mpro110 is a great little projector with some good results. It is no match for the traditional projector in terms of quality, but is a wicked little projector for those who travel light, need an ad-hoc projector or just want a fun toy. The device retails for around £300.
This frst gen compact projector is great, and I cant wait to see how the technology develops in the coming years, one day we may have a Nokia handset that has this technology built-in. I for one cannot wait.
