What’s in the Box?:

Again with this program it’s a download so there are no box shots for you. Like the DVD to iPod Ripper I looked at, I’m using Shaun of the Dead and my iPod nano 4th Gen for this little review.

9

Since this is a video conversion program I first had to rip the Shaun of the Dead DVD, I ripped it to .AVI format, and left it intact, meaning it was the original size and aspect ratio of the DVD.

Once it was ripped I checked it and it looked perfectly fine, the final file weighed in at 1.13GB in size.

Installation, Performance and Comparison:

The program looks very similar to the WinX DVD To iPod Ripper program, it’s laid out almost the same, with some buttons with different titles on them. Instead of ‘DVD Disc’ we have ‘Open’, and instead of ‘DVD Path’ we have ‘Remove’, the other buttons are the same. Right there when you load up the program the instructions are right there for you to see, fairly easy, but you can hit the help button to load up the full instructions if need be. The whole process is easy really. With this program you can convert to Movie or Music, there are two tabs at the bottom that allow you to select a choice.

1

2

Clicking the options buttons brings up a smaller menu where you can change a limited number of things, you can select from formats and sizes, but you can’t manually set the size or aspect ratio.

3

4

Here’s a quick picture of the help menu, it’s actually nicely done with lots of pictures to help you started quickly:

5

To start the process you click the Open button at the top and navigate to the file you want to convert., again I’m doing Shaun of the Dead for this. It appears in the main window once loaded into the program, from there you can also trim the movie a bit if you wish, like trim the opening and ending credits or whatever you wish to trim. You also have the choice again of selecting the Profile, or size, format and quality of the finished movie from a drop down box.

6

7

Once you’re ready to go, hit the start button and wait only a few minutes, it took 10:11 minutes to complete the conversion process, pretty fast.

9

This program seems to use a bit more of my quad core CPU than the DVD Ripper did, looking at Task Manager we see about 44% usage, still not utilizing the full potential of the CPU, but utilizing more the CPU does make the process go faster.

10

The finished file weighed in at 595MB, which is fairly large, especially if you’ve only got 8gigs of space as I do on my iPod. I won’t be fitting many movies on it will I?

11

No pictures this time of the movie running on my iPod, they’d be pretty much the same, the quality is excellent, the audio is synced with the video, but again we’ve got the wide screen aspect ratio which only makes the movie that much smaller on the small screen of the nano.

Still though, the program is free, it works fast, and the quality is excellent, what more could you ask for really?

Me though, I could ask for more, just the ability to change the aspect ratio would make me happy though!

Conclusion:

WinX iPod Video Converter is a great little program really that I could easily recommend for anyone looking for a free way to quickly gets your videos transferred over to your iPod so you can take them with you. It’s compatible with several formats, so most any video you have can be converted to the iPod format.

Not bad for free… we’ve got a winner here!

Pros:

+Fast Conversion time

+Easy to use

+Gets the job done

Cons:

-No ability to change aspect ratio

-Not really customizable
