iPhone 3G – Have you got yours?

So the big day has come and gone – the day that the world went iPhone 3G crazy. People queued, some for hours, to get their hands on the latest version of Apple’s iPhone.  Were you one of them?

I think that we all agree that the iPhone 3G is what the original iPhone should have been.  You may recall that I bought myself an iPhone (2G) back in April, and as much as I loved it the lack of 3G and GPS was an issue for me.  I never actually used it as a phone as my 3UK Sim card (obviously) does not work in my unlocked iPhone with it being a 2G handset.

My last few handsets have all been Nokia Nseries, and I thought that it was about time for a change – don’t get me wrong I am still a Nokia fan – and still have my N95, but this will now be my secondary handset.  So I promptly sold my original iPhone a week or so ago in readiness for the 3G launch and to get in there before the market was flooded with 2G handsets and the price plummeted.  I think that selling it for £100 more than I bought it for was pretty good going.. ;-)

On the announcement that o2 were taking on-line pre-orders last Monday I tried, and failed (as many did) to grab a 16GB (which at £159 was a tenner less than the 2G iPhone I bought only a couple of months ago).  The high-street stores weren’t taking pre-orders, but on trying my local Carphone Warehouse – they were and I was number 8 on their list – yeah.

Sadly I had a call late Thursday afternoon to say that they only had one 16GB delivered, but that they could get one in for me Saturday as their warehouse had about 2,300 available.  He couldn’t order one, as they didn’t officially go on sale until Friday, and advised that I should call in early Friday morning as he was in the store from 6.30.

I set my alarm bright and early on Friday morning – and called the store about 6.40ish – The chap quickly picked up the phone – and said, “I’m glad that you called as there are only about 500 left”  It would seem that other stores across the country were opening their phone lines early for people to reserve stock.  I was amazed that the quota had dropped from 2,300 to 500 and it was only 6.45am – the store didn’t officially open until 8.02 am!  My order was made, I then had to pop in lunchtime to do the paperwork and pay.

Saturday came and I was told that delivery would be ready after 2pm – guess what this never happened much to the annoyance of the staff.  Now it would seem that Tuesday will be iPhone day for me…  I’m hot going to hold my breath.  I hope it does happen though, as that is the day that o2 have told me that they will be porting my 3 number across – cool, I’ll have a new network with no phone – great!

I think that it goes without saying that the launch of the iPhone 3G hasn’t really been a great success with registration problems, crashes, stock issues etc..

How has your iPhone 3G purchase gone?
