Looks like the VoIP wars are starting to hot up with the announcement that the Gizmo Project now have free calls to landlines and mobiles with their ‘All Calls Free’ plan.
The Gizmo Project All Calls Free plan allows you to make free phone calls to other active Gizmo Project users in 60 countries around the world. To be eligible for All Calls Free, both callers need to be registered, active Gizmo Project users. Additionally, the person initiating the call from Gizmo Project must be calling a number listed in their Contacts tab and must be calling a number in one of the countries supported by the All Calls Free plan.
Gizmo Project’s main competitor eBay owned Skype did announce free landline calls within the USA & Canada until the end of the year recently. I wonder how they are going to react to the Gizmo Project announcement.
The free landline calls are currently only available in 60 countries:

Canada, China, Cyprus, Guam, Hong Kong, Malawi, Malaysia, Puerto Rico, Russia, Saipan, San Marino, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, United States, US Vigin Islands, Vatican City.

Another option I have found useful when I travel is earthCALLER. This is a Free PC to Phone VOIP app that lets you call any US or Canadian phone number for free. No minute limits either.
Has some nice feature–saved contact lists, speed dial.
