Opera Mini

Opera have announced the Opera Mini – a web browser for your mobile phone.

Browsers like Pocket IE for Windows based Smartphones, try and render a full sized web page into a small screen. This means sending images meant for a PC to a mobile and then the application squishing the pictures down to fit a small mobile screen. Although the outcome is OK, you will of course be downloading large-ish files to your mobile, which as we all know, comes at a cost.

Opera Mini on the other hand is a web browser that has an extra step in the process. All of the web pages that you request are automatically passed through Opera’s own servers, and rendered on the fly to fit your mobile device. This means that potentially large images are scaled correctly before they are transmitted over GPRS. Excellent!

There are versions available for a whole host of recent mobiles. If you like being able to surf while on the move, go check it out!
