Browser Wars Part III

I think that we all remember the original browser wars back in the 90’s with Microsoft and Netscape going head to head with their products Internet Explorer and Navigator and then again more recently when Mozilla took on Microsoft with the launch of Firefox. Now it would seem that a new chapter in the browser wars is due to begin, and this time the battlefield has moved away from the PC with attentions drawn to new ground – devices.

One company that has been actively targeting these devices is Opera, who’ve made considerable steps in the mobile Internet market with their Opera Mini, and Opera Mobile products for Symbian & Windows Mobile Smartphones. More recently they have expanded their horizons with the release of their browser for the Nintendo DS and earlier this year for Nintendo’s revolutionary Wii games console.

Apple whose Safari Browser was once only available for Mac users, has just been made available (if only as beta) for PC users, but this isn’t the only place that you’ll find Apple’s own browser, you only have to look at the the much anticipated iPhone due for release this week. Also, although not Apple branded, Nokia’s S60 3rd-gen handsets come with a mobile Internet browser that has safari at it’s core..

Not to be left out Mozilla have also announced recently that they are working on Firefox to go for mobiles, although this is some way off yet.

So Microsoft may have the market share with their PC only Internet Explorer but can they sit on their laurels as all around them their competition are actively targeting other devices. They sat with IE6 for far too long, and in doing so FireFox snuck in and took some of their share.. Is the same happening with non-PC web browsing?

Non-desktop access to the Internet is going to grow at an amazing pace over the next few years, it would seem that both Apple & Opera are gearing themselves up for the next generation of net access..

How will you access the net?
