I am almost PixelSkin-ned out as today I will be looking at the PixelSkin for iPad case. Having reviewed the two iPhone 4 PixelSkin cases; I have a pretty good feel for this particular Speck style case.
The PixelSkin for iPad is the super-sized version of the PixelSkin line. For those familiar with the model from the iPhone it is basically the same case, just bigger. This model features the texture tile pattern on the back of the case giving it the distinct PixelSkin look.
Info:
The tactile pixel texture and perfect amount of “squish” is what makes this rubberized iPad case so grippy in-hand and famously protective. Works great with our ShieldView screen films.

What’ in the Box?
The PixelSkin for iPad comes in a rectangular plastic box with a clear front panel that shows off the case. Inside the package we find just the case itself.
The case is composed of a rubbery material that makes the case very tactile and grippable. It measures 0.75” x 7.72” x 9.81” and weighs in at 0.822 oz. It is available in Black, Indigo and Green. For today’s review we will look at the Green model.
Unlike other cases, which do not cover the front of the iPad display, the PixelSkin for iPad does wrap around the front covering the black bezel of the iPad. The main screen remains uncovered and accessible.
There are openings in the case for the headphone jack, position lock, speakers, dock connector and accelerometer. The power and home buttons are covered by rubbery case material.
On the back of the case we see the textured tile pattern which wraps around the sides of the PixelSkin for iPad. We see in the bottom right corner of this backside the Speck name and logo.
Usage:
Installation involves sliding the bottom of the iPad into the bottom of the PixelSkin for iPad Case and then pulling the top corners around the front.
The PixelSkin for iPad feels very secure in one’s hands with the rubbery material. However this material will also attract dust especially the black model.
All the ports and buttons are easily accessible.
On thing I did notice immediately was that the top section was not sitting snuggly against the screen. This is on e of the issue with silicon style cases; they tend to get stretched out.
The case seems like it will keep the iPad safe from minor bumps and taps but is not really designed for industrial strength protection. The front screen is protected by the bezel cover along with a slightly elevated surrounding bezel on the case itself. However there s no screen protector included with the PixelSkin for iPad.
My other issue with the PixelSkin for iPad is based on the color and style. I did not care for the green color while my wife and daughters did, so maybe it is aimed more towards the female iPad users. The PixelSkin design on the smaller iPhone is acceptable and looks rather unique, however the PixelSkin for iPad’s texture is so pronounced that it makes the sleek iPad look like a piece from a Lego set.
Conclusion:
The PixelSkin for iPad is a unique looking case to say the least. It takes the sophisticated looking iPad and gives it a Lego style appearance. Some may like this whimsical style, but it’s not for me. My personal preference has been towards the folio style case that protects the screen from harm when not in use. Also I did not particularly care for the bright green color of the case. Black would probably make the case look less “toylike”.
This is not to say that the PixelSkin for iPad is a bad case, it is in fact a perfectly good silicon style case. It has a good grip quality due to its rubbery composition. It protects the back, sides and some of the front of the iPad and allows access to all the controls with the case in place. The PixelSkin for iPad does add bulk to the iPad which is something to keep in mind.
If you are looking for a silicon/rubbery style case for your iPad then the PixelSkin for iPad is not a bad choice but there are other iPad cases I would check out first.
