Top 10 Free Blackberry Apps for the End of May, 2010

Another month has come and gone, and a batch of new apps have taken stage on the Blackberry App World’s “Top Free” downloads list. While some standards seem like they’ll never drop in popularity, it is always interesting to see what newbies have checked in and what classics have taken the boot.

As we start up the sunny month of June, let’s see what delightful apps rounded out May at the top of the list.

1

10. Navita Sports

    Navita Technologia

This may come as a shocker, but people love their sports. Navita Sports is the current champ for up-to-the-minute sports scores and coverage for sports often less-covered by other applications: soccer, tennis and Formula 1 racing. It’s a foreign-friendly piece of software, offering interfaces in English, Portuguese and Spanish. There are plans to extend the software to cover more sports in the future.

    9. WeatherEye

      The Weather Network

Oh, WeatherEye. It seems you will forever live on as a top Blackberry app. With its latest 2.0.2 release, WeatherEye has fixed connectivity and screen freezing issues, improved their maps, improved the download and update features, and claims to have given a boost to the overall performance of the software. It still gives you the weather forecast, daily information, current alerts and anything else you may need for pretty much any area. It’s nice to see the developers are conscious about its issues and are working to improve them.

      3

      8. Twitter

      Research in Motion Limited

Another app not likely to see a decline in its popularity anytime soon is Twitter. The app for the social network polluting people’s minds with Justing Bieber information and bird-based jargon keeps people in tune with their followers everywhere they go. It’s the fastest way for people to discuss Tipper Gore’s separation with Al and the witty #4wordsbeforedeath people with they could mutter when their time approaches. This is the world in which we live.

      4

      7. Pandora

        Pandora Media, Inc.

Pandora is one of the top music streaming websites where users can build their own playlists based on their auditory likes and dislikes. The app, a highly-rated and functional piece of software within the Blackberry App World, is a standard on the Top Free list and seems to be holding strong. With new Pearl 3G and Bold 9650 support, more people can enjoy tunes on the go through their cellular pocket radios.

        5

        6. Player For YouTube

          Smarter Apps

I’d imagine the extremely creative name of this app has lead to its success…

Player For YouTube allows you to, wait for it… browse, play, search, share and bookmark your favorite YouTube videos. One handy feature is that it gives you a direct link to the video, which you can use on your Twitter or Facebook apps to share with your friends. Gosh, interconnectivity is a swell thing.

          6

          5. Bible

            LifeChurch.tv

Bible also has a rather straightforward name. This app has been around for a while now as well. It’s the Bible. You can read it. When you’re sitting in an airplane, riding a bus, waiting for a subway train, eating alone at your favorite pho restaurant, tanning out back or otherwise ready to pump some biblical iron, Bible blesses you with every lovely verse in 41 different translations. Hallelujiah.

            7

            4. Facebook

            Research In Motion Limited

Apparently people will never get tired of Facebook, and using it on their BlackBerries is one more way of stalking everyone they’ve ever heard of. The Facebook app gives you full Facebook functionality right from your handheld device. You’re familiar with Facebook. You’re probably familiar with the app. ‘Nuff said.

            8

            3. Lookout Mobile Security

              Lookout, Inc.

This app includes Mobile AntiVirus, backup and an easy way to find your missing device. It’s an all-in-one security suite for your cell phone. Blocking viruses, malware, spyware, scanning your apps, scanning your files and backing up your contacts and photos, this app gives you peace of mind. You already live in terror of garbage destroying your home computer, and now with all the functions present in Blackberry phones, you can live in that same terror with your handheld! Unless you have Lookout Mobile Security, that is.

              9

              2. Blackberry Messenger

              Research in Motion Limited

Blackberry Messenger will never not be in the Top Free apps list. It’s an anticlimactic inclusion, but one that holds a permanent seat. You know enough about it for me to end there.

              10

              1. crunchSMS

              Paradigm One Pty Ltd.

CrunchSMS aims to make text chatting a little more friendly. It takes the common concept and displays your texts in more of an instant-messaging format, with bubble text and enjoyable displays. I’ve personally always had a problem with Blackberry’s inability to let you exceed 160 characters. CrunchSMS fixes that issue by splitting up excessive texts into multiple texts, the way many phones do. For those of us who forget that a phone can actually make calls and would prefer to type our way through all of life’s communication, crunchSMS will let you do so with a little more style.
