Musicskins Pin-Up Toons Kimmy Bunny for iPod Nano (4th Gen) Gets Reviewed

kimmy4We all have our gadgets and such, and we spend quite a bit of cash for them, but the majority of them do not come with cases so we need to buy one… Kind of obvious there right? Seriously though, we spend all this money on our stuff, and then we’ve got to spend even more money on accessories and cases to protect our gadgets. Cellphones and Mp3 players are the ones that get used the most often I’m sure, so they really need protecting, one way or another they’re bound to get damaged no matter how careful we are with them.

Today I’m looking at something that not only aims to protect your gadget, specifically my iPod nano 4th Gen, but it’ll add a bit of style and personality to it as well. It’s a skin from a company called Musicskins. Don’t let the name fool you though, they carry much more than music related skins, you’ll find art, logos, models and you can even get them done custom just for you, your company, band or just personal use.

Here’s a bit about the company and the product:

As I mentioned I’m using my Apple iPod nano 4th Gen for this, I picked the Pin-Up Toons Kimmy Bunny to check out, because I wanted something a bit different.

Getting it applied to my iPod is an easy process, just peel and stick basically, but there are no directions included with the skins. You can however check the Musicskins site and their FAQ does have a brief explanation of how to do it. It basically says to clean your device, then apply the label carefully.

So the first thing is to apply the main wrap around skin, you might think this is easy, but it took me a couple tries to get it aligned just right.

It looks good though, and once you have the large sticker on it’s time to attach the ones to the click wheel. These are optional of course, but she’ll look kind of funny with no face…

Attaching those is the done in the same fashion, you just have to line them up and get them centered correctly.

Doesn’t look too bad right? Not quite perfectly centered but good enough for me, I’m happy with it.

Normally I keep my iPod nano in an Otterbox Defender case as I think it offers the best protection for my iPod, and I like the look and functionality of it as well.

According to the Musicskins site I can still use my iPod with a case because the skins are thin and don’t add any bulk… I’m guessing they didn’t test it with the Otterbox Defender because while it looks like it’s in the case, it really isn’t, it was a very tight fit and I had to force it closed, and even then it wasn’t secured all of the way, one of the four clips was still not locked down.

Upon opening the Otterbox Defender back up to find out why it wasn’t closing I found that the Musicskin was a bit damaged:

Now I have to explain that it’s not quite the fault of the Musicskin itself, but the Otterbox Defender is a very tight case, though Musicskins does claim and I quote:  “MusicSkins add almost zero bulk so your device will still integrate perfectly with any case..” So in my case, or with my case, obviously that’s not true, so I basically destroyed the Musiskin by putting it into the Otterbox Defender, essentially I just threw away $15… I got this for review of course, so I didn’t actually spend the money on it, but if I had bought this I would not be very happy about this problem and I would be shooting off an email to their customer support about the claims on their site that it will still fit in a case.

Before I destroyed it though it was a nice skin for the iPod, I feel it does offer good protection for the iPod and you still have full access to the controls even with the skin covering the click wheel.

I’m guessing they need to re-word the claims on their website a bit, maybe phrase it “99% of all cases” or something like that.

Overall though it’s not a bad product I think, it adds protection and a bit of style to your gadget. They offer hundreds of choices to pick from in terms of designs and of course you can create your own as well.

Really I didn’t even have to put my iPod back in the Otterbox, I think it would be relatively safe with just the skin on it, but I like to protect my stuff as best I can and still retain functionality.

If you’re looking for an alternative means to protect your iPod, or many other gadgets, without using a bulky case then this could be a good way to do it, it’ll protect it from scruffs and scratches, and the material does seem durable enough to be able to last quite a while.
