The Review:
There’s no special package, it just comes in a plastic bag, there’s a hang tag on the bag to identify it.
The bag is colored a charcoal color with gray pinstripes. On the front flap is the Speck logo, which opens to a quilted padded pocket, it’s secured with a nice large plastic clip and velcro.
Under the flap you’ll find two small Velcro pocket and larger zipped one which as a keychain clip in it as well.
Behind that those pockets are two more larger pockets that are padded.
On the right side of this set of pocket is another zippered compartment that opens to reveal a mesh bag that can be used for a water bottle of whatever beverage you choose.
Then on the other side another zippered pocket that goes behind the main ones.
On the back you’ll find a padded webbing and the two straps that have a removable, or hide away cross strap. the back and straps are padded very well, the strap are actually very thick.
Hidden under the strap at the top is a rear access zipped flap that allows you to take out your laptop from the back of the bag, quick access basically.
On the top is another small zippered compartment that holds the small handle that you can use instead of the straps to make life a bit easier.
There are two compartments behind the main zipper of the bag. The first one is large and padded on both sides, it has a mesh bag in it and a larger velcro pocket behind it.
On the front of the bag you’ll find a very small hole where the netted pocket is on the inside, the hole is so you can pass your headphone cord through it so you can listen to your music on the go.
The laptop compartment is held closed with an elastic velro strap, the compartment is padded on both sides very well.
So there’s a ton of pockets in this bag but I didn’t see any places for pens and pencils, the little spots you’d find on most every other bag out there. It’s not a big deal but they’re nice to have.
Well you’ve had the rather large tour of the bag, what’s left to do is toss my laptop in there, it’s 15.6” one so it sits fine as this bag accommodates up to 17”.
I tossed my charger and cable into the front pocket, lots of room in there.
Then of course toss my laptop in there.
As I mentioned you can access the laptop from the back as well, it’s interesting, the straps kind of get in the way, you just have to flip them up and over really. Not sure if the the back access is worth it or not, it seems a bit tough to get at it. it’s nice idea, but I don’t think I’d use it personally.
I think the Speck AftPack is a great bag overall, but I have two complaints, which is actually I think one complaint overall though, more of a combined thing. The AftPack bag is big even when empty, it seems the material is very stiff and just doesn’t collapse or give at all, it just holds it’s shape exactly the way it arrived. I haven’t had that much time with this bag, but I would hope that the material would ‘soften’ a bit after usage. If the material relaxes it won’t be as large when it’s empty or even full. \
As far as price is concerned it’s not too bad coming in about $90, it’s less expensive than many others out there and it’s just as good really.
Conclusion:
The Speck AftPack backpack is big, there’s no doubt that you’ll be able to fit everything you need to take with you in it. It’s well, it looks good and you can get it in other colors as well to suit your own tastes. It’s vey well padded and it seems comfortable to wear for long periods as the strap and back are padded very well.
The actual laptop compartment is padded nicely, your laptop should be safe form most things in there, it’s not a bad bag really.
My personal preference is that I think that this bag is just a bit too big for me, if you don’t like really big bags then you might not want this one, but if you need a bag that will let you take a whole lot of stuff with you then this is the one you want surely.
